William Benson Craig was born in Smiths Falls on August 2, 1895. On May 21, 1917 he enlisted with the Canadian Field Artillery joining the 73rd field battery. For the rest of the summer of 1917 he trained in Petawawa with the field artillery but then on October 6, 1917 he transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service. Lieutenant Craig distinguished himself in air battle and on September 10, 1918 he destroyed three enemy aircraft. On September 26th, 1918, William Benson Craig left for the skies to fight and was last seen flying low over Belgian soil. He was never seen again. However, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his abilities. He is commemorated at the Blankenberghe town cemetery in Belgium.
