As President of Planned Parenthood Ontario, Dr. Marion Powell wrote this telegram to The Honourable Monique Begin, Department of National Health and Welfare, to protest budget cuts to the Family Planning Division of the government.
It reads:
“The Planned Parenthood Association of Ontario wish to protest the announced cut to the budget of the family planning division. At a time when concern over teenage pregnancy is emerging as a major social issue the need for strong leadership and support is vital. Increased socio-economic and health risks to young women with unplanned pregnancies make the cutting back on support to existing programs and services an unacceptable solution to budget restraints. The use of public assistance for unwed mothers and unwanted children is less desirable as a long term solution than the promotion of family planning based upon choice. We therefore strongly urge the immediate reinstatement of a full budget allocation to family planning.”
