Roger Kee Cheng was a third generation Chinese Canadian. Born in the B.C. Cariboo in the midst of the Great War, he was the eldest of five. His grandparents, Won and Sing-Choy Cheng, were merchants in Lillooet. Roger grew up in Lillooet and Vancouver. He was 5\u201910\u201d and 200 lbs, a natural leader with excellent hand-eye coordination and a gift for studying. He was good with handling small watercraft thanks to his love of fishing. These characteristics would serve him well during the war. He attended public school in Lillooet and completed first year Arts at the University of British Columbia at sixteen. He went on to study electrical engineering at McGill University in Montreal, graduating at 23.
