To accommodate some of the events on the Games program, Montreal built the Olympic Basin<\/strong> on Notre Dame Island, the Claude Robillard Centre<\/strong> in Ahuntsic and the \u00c9tienne Desmarteau Centre<\/strong> in Rosemont.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rosemont venue was named after one of Quebec’s first Olympians, \u00c9tienne Desmarteau, who participated in the 1904 Games and won a gold medal in the 56-pound weight throw.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t

Montreal already had several facilities that could be used for sports, like the Maurice Richard Arena<\/strong> and the Maisonneuve Centre, now known as the Pierre Charbonneau Centre<\/strong> in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve area, the Forum<\/strong> in Ville-Marie, the Botanical Garden<\/strong> in Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie (used for running races, among other events) and university sports complexes<\/strong> (McGill University in Ville-Marie and Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al in C\u00f4te-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Gr\u00e2ce).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t
