Master Toa Wong \u9ec3\u6ed4<\/strong> (1914\u20132015)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A pioneering Cantonese opera musician and educator, Master Toa Wong<\/strong> immigrated to Canada in 1961. As lead erhu player with Vancouver\u2019s Jin Wah Sing Chinese Orchestra and the country\u2019s first Cantonese opera music professor, he trained more than two hundred students. Through teaching and performance, he helped preserve Cantonese opera as a living tradition in Canada.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n\t

Master Toa Wong helped build and document an important collection of Cantonese opera costumes at UBC\u2019s Museum of Anthropology and donated 586 recordings to the Asian Library. Tse Gar Yin \u200b\u200b\u8b1d\u5bb6\u71d5<\/strong> (1918\u20132000)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Born in Guangzhou, Tse Gar Yin <\/strong>grew up immersed in Cantonese opera and joined a professional company as a young woman. In 1938, she toured Chinatowns across Canada before settling in Toronto during World War II. Performing into the 1950s and 1960s, she became a central community figure, mentoring younger artists and supporting cultural and fundraising events.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n\t

Ho Sing-Wah \u4f55\u9192\u83ef<\/strong> (1912\u2013?)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trained in Guangzhou and arriving in Canada in 1939, Ho Sing-Wah<\/strong> played a key role in shaping Cantonese opera in Toronto. A conductor, percussionist, and organizer, he co-founded several opera and music clubs, including Xiao Shao Music Club (\u7c2b\u97f6\u97f3\u6a02\u793e)<\/strong>, Ge Sheng Music Club (\u6b4c\u8072\u97f3\u6a02\u793e)<\/strong>, Nan Hua Music Club (\u5357\u83ef\u97f3\u6a02\u793e)<\/strong>, and Yet Hoy Cantonese Music Club<\/strong> (\u7cb5\u6d77\u97f3\u6a02\u793e)<\/strong>. For over three decades, he helped transform informal gatherings into lasting community institutions and transmit opera traditions to new generations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n\t

Beatrice<\/strong> Jai \u5ed6\u7464\u83ef<\/strong> (1928-2017) and Raymond Jai \u8b1d\u8000\u5149<\/strong> (1916-2004)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Born in Vancouver, Beatrice<\/strong> and Raymond Jai<\/strong> were active members of the city\u2019s Ching Won Music Association<\/strong> before moving to Toronto. In 1964, they co-founded the Yet Hoy Cantonese Music Club<\/strong>, where Raymond served as music director. Opera shaped both their public work and home life, as rehearsals, costumes, and music became part of everyday family experience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\n\t
