Page 2 of “History of the Operational Groups – Group A,” from a Services Reconnaissance Department (SRD) history of Australian special operations during the Second World War. The document describes changes to SRD’s operational organization and preparations to support the Australian 9th Division’s Operation OBOE VI in Borneo in 1945. Group A was responsible for providing intelligence before and during the assault, while plans were approved for SRD Operation STALLION. A special forces detachment under Major Mollard and a signals sub-detachment under Captain Harris were organized to accompany the Australian forces. Captain Ulrick served as liaison officer, with Major Hardwick providing local knowledge and advice. Communications arrangements connected operations AGAS, SEMUT and STALLION. Following the successful assault, personnel participated in smaller operations named MARE, GELDING, FOAL and FILLY before eventually being absorbed into SEMUT. The document also describes preparations for establishing a base at Labuan, including the movement of personnel and supplies from Morotai aboard HMAS Tigersnake, and assistance provided by local people from British Borneo. These records illustrate how SRD coordinated intelligence, communications and clandestine operations with conventional Australian military forces.
